Ortaia Pergola DOC Terracruda Winery from Marche

From The World of ABC Economics – Monthly News Bulletin from abceconomics.com – No. 3 – February 2016

By Daniela Damiano

Wine characteristics do not just rely on terroir but on the combination of the latter with grape variety and vinification skills.
This month DANIELA DAMIANO discovers what makes Ortaia Pergola DOC Terracruda Winery from Marche so special.

Imagine a land where the green of hills is deeper, where your eyes and mind get lost in an endless landscape of high mountains and a calm and peaceful sea. The Terracruda winery has its roots in this magic land, in the village of Fratte Rosa, perched atop a hill that straddles the border between the two provinces of Pesaro-Urbino and Ancona, in a region of Central Italy that bears a plural noun, the Marches, symbol of endless surprises for visitors.

This region is at the crossroads of quality wine making areas, where all of the three Controlled Designation of Origin (CDO) labels of the Pesaro-Urbino province are produced: the Bianchello del Metauro, the Colli Pesaresi Sangiovese and the Pergola. It was Terracruda’s choice only to produce quality wines from indigenous grapes embodying the essence of local terrains.

Ortaia Pergola Doc Aleatico Superiore 2013

This wine is produced from Aleatico variety grown since ancient times in the area of the Pergola village in Marche. Wines made from this variety are complex in bouquet and taste. This is the youngest of the three local grape varieties of the Pesaro-Urbino province and is available in the three versions of Rosato, Rosso and Aleatico. Grapes have been hand-harvested in small crates from a clayey soil with rich presence of sand. Aged for at least 1 year in barriques and fining in bottle and refined for at least 4 months in bottle ABV: 14%. Serving temperature: 18°C. On the appearance it has a light ruby colour with purple reflections. This grapes provides the wine with an aromatic complexity that expresses itself with notes of rose and violet and evokes hints of red fruits both for its taste and for its smell. The taste is full and harmonious, well balanced and with a soft and round aftertaste thanks to its sweet tannin.

Food matching and where to find

This wine goes well with rich main courses with spicy flavor. If you wish to match with something local from Marche it is worth a visit to Rosso Di Sera in Covent Garden where you can taste the wine as well. For trade inquiry you can contact Sibilla Foods Importers exclusive importer for the UK.
